The Komen Race for the Cure® Series has become the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Races will be held in 107 U.S cities and two foreign countries in 2000 with over 1 million participants expected. Proceeds from the Komen Race for the Cure® Series funds important breast cancer research, as well as breast health initiatives on a local level. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in the local community where the Race is held, helping support breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved. The programs are funded based upon a special needs assessment survey performed by each Affiliate. A minimum of 25% of Race proceeds helps fund breast cancer research & project grants awarded through the Komen Foundation Headquarters. Please visit www.raceforthecure.com

MAKING THE GRADE
=================
Restaurants are continually graded by various health departments, giving your current customers and future clientele an idea of how you "rate" with the competition. Here's an interesting site that's provided by WRAL-TV (Raleigh, NC) that catalogs sanitation grades for the state of North Carolina. It is part of the station's "Five On Your Side" wral-tv.com/features/5onyourside/rest_evals/ and also provides an archive of scores back to May 1999. Have not had an opportunity to research similar sites but do believe that a little effort will find many county/state government web sites and various health scoring systems for a particular area, (most likely listed with health/sanitation departments).=============
BEING GRADED
=============
Ever wondered about AAA? Many of you are active participants with their numerous travel guides and other consumer resources. When is the last time you tried to access information from their web site? It's one of the hardest to navigate (in the editor's opinion) when it comes down to finding "important" information. For some reason they seem to hide the web link that gets you beyond the "find your local office" (which when entered brings you to the office that is dedicated to that specific zip code). Use this "inside" link - and remember to "bookmark" it because it's not easy to find (of course you can always ask us). www.aaa.com/news12/prmain.html does the trick.==================
ABOUT BOOKMARKS
==================
We always try to help with your "back office" and computer skills, in hopes that this will free up your time dedicated to the efforts of serious Sales, Marketing and Public Relations. If you do any of your research on the Internet you know what a jungle that bookmark file, or "favorites" can become. A simple software solution exists that allows you to convert/sway those bookmarks and favorites from Netscape to Internet Explorer and vice versa. When it converts the files it does so alphabetically which should help ease your search through the bookmarks. Both Netscape and IE place the most recent bookmark at the bottom of the list. "Bookmark Converter" takes the files and arranges them A-Z, with little effort needed (other than knowing where to find the correct files for conversion). Download from hospitality-1st.com/school/bkmrkcnv.html (when on a network be sure that the Network Admin has said ok). The program installs quickly and runs as smoothly as any we've seen..==========
ABOUT AOL
==========
We're often asked why we "pick on" AOL users. Here's a few points; you're web browser (defaults to Internet Explorer) is never fully expanded and generally it forces AOLers to ask - "why do I have to scroll vertically (and) horizontally when I'm on a web page"? The reason is because IE is constrained within the AOL window, so that you can see all those silly navigation channels and advertising it (AOL) keeps in the forefront. Have you ever tried to run Internet Explorer or Netscape "outside" of AOL? It's easy -- but most are a bit "afraid" to try it -- you can't hurt anything. When you've got your AOL up and running go to Start Button ---> Programs ---> then find the Internet Explorer category, and lastly click on the icon, (the rounded blue "e"). For some it's right on the taskbar (beware though because that icon may be "tied" to AOL). Our second pointer has to deal with that ridiculous e-mail program that causes you to "copy and paste" most links if they are not specifically formatted for the AOL e-mail program. AOL requires special formatting (HTML) codes to be included with links so that you can launch them by the click of the mouse. Netscape, Outlook and Eudora users see "links" simply when they begin with https:// or www. (Netscape e-mail does require the https://) --- AOLers can't click on a link unless it is formatted with a href, "click here" etc etc etc. Very annoying to other users (that's why we don't format to AOL standards). A third point; the infantile use of "screen names" to try and reflect your business entity. This goes hand in hand with "well I can get my e- mail anywhere" -- or the best one I've heard, "I've got AOL stock! This while they a have a web site domain dedicated to their travel business yet they don't know how to retrieve e-mail from their own domain (now would someone care to tell me how that makes any sense when it comes to Sales & Marketing?). Wrapping this up -- you need to understand the alternatives and how they work -- AOL is not the "Internet" but rather a way to connect to the Internet. Many local ISP's (Internet Service Providers) charge less than the $21.95 per month (AOL does offer other plans which can reduce the fees). Our web hosting company charges $18.95/month, and allows for web based e-mail access if needed.======
