The Komen Race for the Cure® Series has become the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Races will be held in 107 U.S cities and two foreign countries in 2000 with over 1 million participants expected. Proceeds from the Komen Race for the Cure® Series funds important breast cancer research, as well as breast health initiatives on a local level. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in the local community where the Race is held, helping support breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved. The programs are funded based upon a special needs assessment survey performed by each Affiliate. A minimum of 25% of Race proceeds helps fund breast cancer research & project grants awarded through the Komen Foundation Headquarters. Please visit www.raceforthecure.com

BLIND COPY
==========
We've been writing for Hospitality Industry interests for nearly a two year period already - but still get numerous requests that are related to formatting e-mail and using the BCC: function properly. So, we've created a help file graphically, which shows you a three step process that you should find very easy to understand. MS-Word is used as the address book --- which is another trick we disclose so that you do not have to have information stored with your email address book (the very same address book that a hacker's virus may be looking for). Maintaining your address book listing separately and away from your e-mail program is a valuable safeguard, and let me repeat - easy to do. Once you format an address book in Word or Excel you have many more functions available too (i.e. specialized sorting and database management). Take a look at our suggestions: www.hospitality-1st.com/school/blind-copy.html - and if you need additional help don't hesitate to write. We see way too many companies violating the privacy of e-mail recipients when they are sending mass e-mails -- especially those containing Press and News Releases and lengthy attachments. There is no excuse for this type of blatant e-mail address exposure - some very large companies are the worst offenders. E-Mail privacy (lack of) is not the spot for "on the job training"...===============
WEB SITE REVIEW
===============
Please remember that anytime we review a web site, it is done from a "learning prospective" and with that in mind we're having a look at the Durham (NC) Convention and Visitors Bureau this week. First thing that must be pointed out is the very professional manner Amy Wilmoth (Internet Communications Manager for DCVB) presented when she submitted the site www.Durham-NC.com for review here. Her e-mail was both pleasant and business-like -- complete contact information was provided and most importantly the link to the DCVB was formatted properly. Many times we get notes with "go here and see our web site" - only to be given an address like somewhere.com which isn't "clickable" in an e-mail. Amy made it easy to know the who/what/where/why from the beginning. About the site; the opening page changes depending on whether you are using Netscape or Internet Explorer (remember AOL uses IE) - in IE a "pop-up" window asks if you wish to take a survey -- with Netscape, the feature doesn't work. We're not too charmed with "pop-ups" since they are a bit of an intrusion - especially on the home page -- this one points to a survey and we understand why it is there. A "scrolling marquee" at bottom adds to the confusion and nearly (20) images must be loaded for the home page process to be complete. Once inside the web site things move along nicely -- the News & Media Services info is very extensive, meeting planners have a full slate to select from also. The calendar could be more current (past events excluded), the re- location information is probably the best around and this web site can serve as a clear example of all-in-one. Not much left out...====================
LEARNING BY EXAMPLE
====================
Our first "Learning by Example" went over so well about four weeks ago we're back at it. This week subscriber Carla Monroe(DOS) James Madison Hotel (Norfolk, VA) is sharing a newsletter that's created with PowerPoint and intended as a sales piece and one that also is used for some very valuable employee recognition. It's made available here www.hospitality-1st.com/school/james-madison.html and offers you a quick screen shot and download instructions for saving the file to your hard drive so you can see all the elements as they were originally intended. I think you'll enjoy the Madison Monthly...======
