CAN YOU HELP?
===============
There's been a premise held here from Newsletter Issue #1 -- if we can help a student interested in the Hospitality Industry -- we'll always try our best. Now I'm asking for your help. Juline Mills is a graduate student and teaching fellow at the University of North Texas. She would like your responses to a survey which focuses on "Truth in Menu Law". To participate you're asked to take 5 minutes out and visit courses.unt.edu/jmills/survey.html where your input will be greatly appreciated. It's a no nonsense, no gimmicks or traps, type of web page -- strictly business, and Juline thanks you in advance (along with the editor here).============
BE EFFICIENT
============
What's the number one computer skill anyone should master? You're probably thinking "the re-boot button" - wrong!! That's probably a close second though. Actually something that continues to amaze me is that since so many of us are tied to our computers, why there's a lack of some basic computer/keyboard skills that could make your day go that much faster and most importantly - more efficient. The "simple" task of "copy, cut and paste" still escapes many users. So, by way of graphic example, the technique is presented again in our "school" www.hospitality-1st.com/school/copy-paste.html and should serve to help you along. Many mention that they have never tried the (right) mouse button and that's where these little helpers reside. Try that right mouse button while you're on a web page, composing an e-mail or working with that Press Release in a word processing program. It's there for a reason and can make your time at the computer much more user friendly.==================================
WHAT'S THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY?
==================================
Here are some astounding and little known facts. The Hospitality Industry, also referred to as the travel or tourism industry, is composed of fifteen segments including lodging, commercial and institutional foodservice, cruise lines, travel agency, meeting and convention centers, arenas, sport complexes, resorts, parks, clubs and tourism related transportation. It is the world's largest industry accounting for more jobs, tax revenue and sales, than any other industry. In the US, the Hospitality Industry's employment growth is - twice that of any other industry - and will become the nation's largest industry by the year 2010. You're welcome to this tidbit of information courtesy of the US Government Bureau of Statistics.====================
EMPLOYMENT ISSUES
====================
There's always two sides to every story -- some might say three if you consider party A, party B - and then the truth being the third side. We've come across an interesting "trend" with regards to recruiting in the industry. Seems that many companies are turning to (remote) recruiters, or regional specialists, which isn't really anything new. But what's changing is the use of alternate identity by the recruiters. Instead of using their companies normal e-mail network many are turning to Hotmail, Yahoo etc. There is nothing wrong with using those other services (most resort to web based e- mail because they don't know how to configure their e-mail program to work from a remote location --- here's where IT/IS support and that of the web master fall terribly short). So what's the problem using these alternative e-mail points? Simple -- you're losing out on valuable marketing impressions. Companies are tripping over one another to have this/that .com in the Hospitality Industry (or any industry for that matter) yet they'll waste impressions with their remote recruiters -- it makes absolutely no sense -- the folks in advertising, along with Sales & Marketing, should be raising a few eyebrows...=======================
YOU'RE A TRAVELER TOO
=======================
Surely all of us like to travel (it's a perk in the industry that many take for granted). As any traveler, it's always nice to know where you're going and where you're headed. When your work is done today and you have a minute to "play" on the computer - be sure to visit the National Geographic Map/Atlas web site. www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/main.html?STST=atlasThat's it for today -- make the most of your Sales, Marketing and Public Relations effort. Remember to thank an unsuspecting client, past guest, frequent diner or potential customer. You'll be amazed by the value it (a well placed thanks) still has...
See you next Tuesday, as we continue to build a "Bridge of Hospitality" ©
