Worldspan Increases Market Share, Advances in GDS Ranking
|
Atlanta, GA May 15, 2001 Worldspan announced it has substantially increased its share of the global distribution system (GDS) market, particularly in the United States, the world's largest travel market. For the 12 months ending March 2001, Worldspan processed nearly 600,000 more net airline bookings than its nearest competitor, positioning Worldspan as the second largest of the four major GDSs operating in the U.S., according to data derived from Market Information Data Tapes (MIDT) compiled by the GDSs for airline analysis.

By tallying actual airline segments transacted by the major reservations systems, MIDT data offer the most definitive standard of GDS market share, and are more accurate than measures such as travel agency locations or agent workstations.

This is a crucial milestone in Worldspan's quest for the top. In recent years we have dedicated ourselves to growing our share of the GDS market, and the latest data reflect the outstanding advances we have made, said Paul J. Blackney, president and chief executive officer for Worldspan. As Worldspan continues to expand our customer base, building especially on our dominant position in e-commerce and our strength among cyber-agencies, we will extend our lead over the competition and set our sights even more squarely on number one.

Worldspan announced its jump to second position in U.S. GDS market share at the Worldspan 2001 Executive Briefing, a gathering of top Worldspan customers from throughout the United States and around the world. Convening May 14-16 at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, the event celebrates Worldspan's recent achievements in travel distribution and outlines the Company's strategy for future growth.

Innovation is our greatest advantage, Blackney noted. While our competitors retrench, Worldspan keeps moving forward with exciting new technology, more focused customer service, creative partnerships designed to help our customers thrive in a fast-changing industry, and the best, most dedicated team of professionals in the business. And we have every intention of accelerating our pace.

With developments like that announced today, we are seeing the results of a company culture that constantly asks 'what if?' It's that spirit of invention and creativity that enables Worldspan to produce the next-generation technology our customers need.
