Japanese Sculptor to Exhibit at Fayetteville Museum of Art
|
Fayetteville, NC February 2004 Renowned Japanese Sculptor Katsumi Murakami will open an exhibit at the Fayetteville Museum of Art on September 18, 2004. The show will run through November 7th. In the months prior to his exhibition, Murakami, working as an artist in residence at both Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Museum of Art, will be creating the pieces that will be on display from raw materials.

Its an honor to have an artist of this caliber exhibit at our museum, says Tom Grubb, Fayetteville Museum of Art Director. Our community will also have the opportunity to witness the creative process of Murakami as he fabricates his sculptures for this exhibit.

One of the pieces Murakami creates will remain in Fayetteville. A large outdoor sculpture will be temporarily added to the sculpture garden on the grounds of the Museum of Art. In 2005, the sculpture will become part of Fayettevilles landscape when it is moved to the new 13-acre Festival Park in downtown Fayetteville.

Murakami has pieces in collections around the world, including Washington, Japan and Mexico. In his work, he explores how we relate to the space around us and the importance that negative space plays within an object. He works in metal, bamboo, glass, wood and marble.

Throughout the year, the museum hosts a variety of changing art exhibits, educational programs, concerts and workshops. Recent exhibits include Ansel Adams and Norman Rockwell lithographs. The museum is free and open Monday through Friday from 10am to 5pm and 1pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
