College of Education
Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies (HPERLS)
The Travel and Tourism field today is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. Specialized careers and employment opportunities for trained and skilled employees exist with travel agencies, airlines, hotel & motels, resorts, attractions, cruise lines, surface transportation firms, tourist offices and many related fields. Projections from the World Travel and Tourism council indicate that tourism will continue to remain the world's largest industry and industry employment will continue to experience a growth rate that is 50% higher than all other industries combined.

The goal of the Travel and Tourism program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is to promote your academic and career success, self-growth and leadership development. Faculty and staff are highly skilled and caring individuals who are committed to providing quality education, personal attention to students, and helping students develop personal and professional skills that make a difference in this changing world.

This professional area is one of the most exciting fields available to people in the 21st century. To prepare students for a career in Travel and Tourism our program features core course work in computer applications, travel behavior, tourism planning and development, tourism marketing, group tour operations, corporate and leisure travel agency management, convention and visitors bureau management, cruise industry management, resort development and management, and tourism research.

A Travel and Tourism major culminates in an internship experience individualized to the interests and needs of the student. We are capable of placing interns at various locations in Nebraska and across the United States. Completion of an internship is a student's most important academic endeavor as national data indicate internship work leads to employment for 80% of the interns. Examples of past internship placements include Disney World, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Sanibel Island, Florida, U.S. Air in Denver and many resorts, visitors bureaus and hotels throughout the United States.
