Washington,
DC January 2005 The December Travel Price Index, the TPI, rose 5.2
percent compared to December 2003. Over the twelve month period ending
in December 2004, the Index was up 4.5 percent - the largest annual increase
since 2000. Gasoline prices, which jumped 26.1 percent from one year ago
and 18.1 percent for the year to date, were a major factor. Lodging prices
also increased, up 5.0 percent compared to December 2003 and 5.2 percent
over the course of the year. However, because demand was relatively weak,
airfares declined 1.8 percent during 2004. The Consumer Price Index, or
CPI-U, rose 3.3 percent against December 2003 and 2.7 percent for the year
to date.
