DC � September 2006 � The Travel Price Index (TPI) for the month of August
was 0.6 percent lower than previous month and 6.2 percent higher than August
2005. Gasoline prices increased 19.6 percent over August 2005 and were
down 0.5 percent from previous month. Lodging prices were up 4.8 percent
compared to August 2005 and declined 1.3 percent from previous month. Airfares
increased 5.8 percent against twelve months earlier and decreased 1.9 percent
from previous month. The Consumer Price Index, or CPI-U, was up 0.2 percent
from previous month and 3.8 percent from August 2005.
Developed by the Travel Industry Association of America�s (TIA), the Travel Price Index (TPI) measures the seasonally unadjusted inflation rate of the cost of travel away from home in the United States. The TPI is based on U.S. Department of Labor price data collected for the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI). The TPI is released monthly (linked here) and is directly comparable to the CPI.
