May 2004 Travel Price Index (TPI) was up 5.6 percent compared to May 2003
- the largest year-over-year increase in the Index since September 2000.
Lodging prices rose 5.2 percent from twelve months ago. Airfares, on the
other hand, declined 1.2 percent during the same period. Motor fuel prices
jumped 29.9 percent against May 2003 and 9.4 percent over the previous
month. Overall inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U)
increased more slowly than the TPI, rising 3.1 percent from one year earlier.
Developed
by TIA, the TPI measures the seasonally unadjusted inflation rate of the
cost of travel away from home in the United States. TPI is released monthly
and is directly comparable to the CPI.
