TIA Reports: Industry Performance Uneven in December
TIA Reports: Industry Performance Uneven in December
Washington, DC February 2005 Although December was a good month for key sectors of the travel industry, the Travel Industry Association of Americas (TIA) Industry Performance Indicators (IPI) also reflected that the travel-related employment situation was generally weak during 2004. Domestic air revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased 4.6 percent compared to December 2003 and 8.1 percent for the year to date. International air RPMs rose 9.8 percent from a year ago and 15.5 percent over the calendar year. Hotel and lodging receipts grew 9.1 percent against December 2003 and 8.8 percent for the year to date. Despite these positive signs, airlines employed around 3 percent fewer workers than in 2003 and the number of lodging jobs remained unchanged. The monthly IPI provide a snapshot of recent trends in travel-related industry segments.
