Washington,
DC October 2004 The Travel Industry Association
of America (TIA) praised the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
for action allowing a one-time exemption without penalty for visitors from
Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries who arrive in the United States without
a machine-readable passport. The exemption will be permitted for a six-month
period following the October 26 deadline requiring machine readable passports
for all VWP visitors.
The October 22nd announcement concerning MRPs and the treatment of Visa Waiver travelers by Under Secretary Hutchinson is welcome news. It comes on the heels of several recent initiatives by the Administration that reflect the need to enhance border security while maintaining the uninterrupted flow of millions of legitimate international visitors that are so critical to our nations economic and social wellbeing, said William S. Norman, TIAs president and CEO. Because we understand the value of requiring newer, machine-readable passports and how it will enhance and speed up the inspections process, TIA has always supported this requirement. We also appreciate efforts by Homeland Security and the State Department to remind Visa Waiver travelers about this and other changes affecting entry into the U.S., said Norman. TIA has consistently supported federal programs that truly enhance national security while at the same time permitting legitimate international visitors continued access to our country for business and pleasure.
