Diego, CA � July 2001 � John Hawkins, a prominent San Diego businessman
and community leader, is the newly elected chairman of the Board of Directors
of the San Diego Convention & Visitors
Bureau (ConVis). Hawkins, President and CEO of Cloud 9 Shuttle, will
serve as ConVis Chairman through June, 2002.
Joining Hawkins on the 2001/2002 Board of Directors are four newly elected members from the local business community. Each has been elected to a three-year term commencing July 1, 2001. They are Dorcy Bowman Rose, CMP, executive director of Rendezvous; C. Sam Marasco, President of LandGrant Development; Lorin Stewart, director of San Diego Operations of Historic Tours of America (Old Town Trolley Tours) and Ray Warren, general manager of the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. The ConVis Board of Directors is comprised of 39 voting members representing both visitor and non-visitor industry interests. The board also includes twenty-three ex-officio directors who represent local government, business and civic groups throughout San Diego County. In addition to Chairman Hawkins, officers for 2001/2002 include First Vice Chairman David Cohn, president of The Cohn Restaurant Group; Second Vice Chairman Joe Terzi, Area Managing Director of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide; Secretary Dr. Joyce Gattas, Dean of the College of Professional Studies & Fine Arts at SDSU; and Treasurer Susie Baumann, owner and operator of the Bali Hai and Tom Ham�s Lighthouse restaurants. The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau is a private, non-profit mutual benefit corporation comprised of approximately 1,700 small, medium and large businesses seeking to build a better community through the visitor industry. ConVis members include such tourism-related entities as hotels, restaurants, tour operators, caterers, retail stores and transportation companies as well as other businesses not directly involved in the hospitality sector. The primary objective of ConVis is to promote and market the greater San Diego region as a leisure travel destination and convention site. Tourism is San Diego�s third largest industry. Last year, visitors pumped over $5.2 billion into the region, a 3.6% increase over the previous year. The visitor industry provides approximately 177,000 jobs countywide. San
