Atlanta, GA � January 2004 � Since 1985 the Southeast Tourism Society has published the Top 20 Events. The best events across the Southeast compete to receive the prestigious Top 20 designation. Through a nomination process, the Southeast Tourism Society chooses the Top 20 events going on in the Southeast for each month of the year, and publishes this list of winners quarterly. The Top 20 Events publication is sent to over 300 newspapers, magazines, radio stations, TV stations and others, as well as 125 AAA publications. The combined circulation runs into the millions.

To be nominated for a Top 20 Event, an event must be at least in its 3rd year and must have a minimum attendance of 1000.

Jan./Feb.�13th Annual Gatlinburg Winterfest�Gatlinburg, TN�The City of Gatlinburg �lights up� with millions of Christmas lights. The city sponsors 47 displays and there are others furnished by restaurants and area hotels. Jan. 8-11�Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration�Memphis, TN�Elvis has left us, physically, but The King still rules Memphis and fans celebrate his birthday every year. Jan. 10-18�14th Annual Wilderness Wildlife Week�Pigeon Forge, TN�Recognized as one of the nation�s leading conservation events, the event features entertaining and educational presentations, seminars and hands-on demonstrations. Jan. 17-18�Cape Fear Model Railroad Show & Sale�Wilmington, NC�The Golden Days of rail travel might be gone, but railroading still has a grip on America and much of it is manifested through models. Jan. 22-31�Augusta Futurity�Augusta, GA�A purse and awards in excess of more than $800,000 and a crowd exceeding 45,000, make this the largest and richest cutting horse event east of the Mississippi River and one of the top four in the world. Jan. 25�Lowcountry Oyster Festival�Charleston, SC�Thousands flock to one of America�s oldest, most beautiful cities to dig into 65,000 pounds of steamed oysters at Boone Hall Plantation. Features fresh oysters, chili, barbeque, fried shrimp, oyster eating contest, music, children�s games and contest. Feb. 1-24�Mississippi�s Gulf Coast Mardi Gras�Biloxi, d�Iberville, Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula�Held where the first Mardi Gras parade took place in 1699 when the French discovered the area, the tradition continues 300 years later with some southern refinements with parades every weekend in a different Gulf town featuring a different theme, but one thing�s always the same: Crowds eagerly beg the Krewes for �throws,� jewelry and doubloons; 228-896-6699; Janice Jones; www.gulfcoast.org.

Feb. 1-Feb. 29�Native Islander Gullah Celebration�Hilton Head Island, SC�Its origins are in slavery, but the Gullah culture is kept alive through vivid storytelling in the dialect that appears to be a combination of African languages and English. Feb. 5-16�Florida State Fair�Florida State Fairgrounds, FL�Always in Tampa, always in February, the Florida State Fair is a 12-day celebration of the Sunshine State on the 319-acre Florida State Fairgrounds site. Feb. 11-14�National Farm Machinery Show & Championship Tractor Pull�Louisville, KY�The largest indoor farm show in America stresses the technological explosion that is revolutionizing the agriculture industry. Feb. 20-24�Mardi Gras in Cajun Country�Lafayette, LA�The second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States is in the heart of Cajun Country and features rides and games on the carnival midway, live bands on the sound stage, numerous parades, costume contests and street dances. 800-346-1958; info@lafayettetravel.com; www.lafayettetravel.com.

Feb. 24�Mardi Gras in Terrebonne Parish�Houma, LA�Houma celebrates the largest Mardi Gras outside the Metro Area of New Orleans. Feb. 26-28�Georgia National Rodeo�Perry, GA�The Georgia National Rodeo is sanctioned by the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association). The Rodeo features specialty acts plus cowboys and cowgirls from across the country competing in six events: saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, and barrel racing. Feb. 28-29�Kentucky Crafted: The Market�Louisville, KY�Exclusive Kentucky market, featuring 300 of Kentucky�s finest contemporary and traditional crafts. March 7�Gasparilla Pirate Fest�Tampa, FL�For nearly 100 years, pirates have invaded Tampa Bay seeking treasure.
