Restaurant & Institutional Management Dept. (HRIM) Erie, PA
Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management was developed at Mercyhurst over 29 years ago in response to a growing demand for professionals in this field. Students are provided with hands on experiences and numerous opportunities to practice their hospitality skills in well-equipped food service facilities and state of the art classrooms. HRIM has been designed to provide the essential management abilities vitally needed by professional management in this highly specialized and diversified industry. In addition to rigorous classroom activities, the Mercyhurst College HRIM Department has developed one of the strongest internship programs with industry leaders of any HRIM school in the country. Rigid learning objectives and guidelines have been established that permit a qualified student (one who has earned at least 60 credits or has taken at least 6-7 HRIM courses) to leave campus during the regular academic calendar year to obtain valuable management and learning experiences while earning as many as 9 credits from a pre-approved internship/co-op facility. Entering freshman/transfer students are required to participate in the dining room service-training lab as scheduled in conjunction with the Introduction to Hospitality Management (HRIM 100) class. This course is open to any student (regardless of his or her major) and is designed to permit interested students to explore career opportunities within the unlimited boundaries of the expansive service industry.
