Florida Gulf Coast University Resort & Hospitality Management (RHM) Fort Myers, FL

The FGCU'S Resort & Hospitality Management program focus is comprehensive resort management. The specialized BS degree program began offering classes Fall of 2003, and is the culmination of resort industry leaders working on behalf of the University to design and offer a degree program tailored to the dynamic and complex needs of premier resorts in Southwest Florida. The 51 credit curriculum design meets this challenge by marrying traditional hotel, food & beverage hospitality education with recreation management, marketing and technology education. Students are able to apply what they learn in the classroom to work experience during a required 1500 hour, or approximately nine month internship. Each RHM student is paired with an industry mentor the spring of their junior year, to guide them as they make career decisions. In the near future students will have the opportunity to work on campus at the $8.4 million Sugden Resort & Hospitality Management Facility gifted to the University from philanthropists Margaret and Herbert Sugden. Currently in the planning stages, the academic boutique resort facility, will be a virtual learning laboratory for students offering guest accommodations, meeting facilities and a dining room for students to operate and manage.

The Southwest Florida region is home to over forty premier resorts and over 160 private clubs. The University has designated internship relationships with nearby resorts and clubs such as: the Ritz Carlton, the Hyatt Regency, the Registry Resort, the Sanibel Harbour Resort, the Laplaya Beach Club & Resort, Diamond Head Resorts, the Edgewater, and the Naples Beach and Golf Resort as well as numerous exclusive private clubs in the area. The curriculum foundation is based on resort management education. Several tracks to further specialize and meet the emerging needs of resort management are expected to be added over the next few years; club management, spa management, golf management, resort timeshare management, tennis management and culinary arts.

The Resort and Hospitality Management Program is offered on the beautiful and growing campus of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), a public comprehensive university offering thirty four undergraduate and 18 graduate degree programs. The University opened in the fall of 1997 and is in the enviable position of having all new campus facilities, including student housing rated the best in the nation. Technology and distance learning complement traditional campus course delivery options. The University is experiencing double digit student enrollment growth, and currently has over 6000 full and part-time students. The institution is located between Fort Myers and Naples, on a nature preserve. The climate is subtropical and recreation opportunities abound. Students take advantage of beautiful beaches, kayaking, hiking trails, golf and tennis year round. FGCU's RHM program and the area resort industry invite students to "Learn Here, Work Here, Create Your World At Fgcu.
