Inside Look At What They Like to Do in Americas Top 10 Cities

Beverly Hills, CA August 2004 Whether the family is getting away for a long weekend, summer vacation or winter break, kids just wanna have fun and parents just want to get away from it all. But, how do parents keep the entire clan happy on the road, especially the kids? A wrong move like choosing to take the family to a stodgy museum, a restaurant with no kids menu or a bad strip mall could result in reading the dreaded essay by little Joe or Jan titled, Why I Dont Like Summer Vacation.

One hotel brand is helping put a stop to such family vacation conundrums with the first-ever hotel program created by kids, catering to kids. From providing information about cool skate parks to the best burger or ice cream joints around, Embassy Suites Hotels Kids-Eye View can help parents increase the fun factor on their next family vacation or outing.

To see the world from a Kids-Eye View, Embassy Suites Hotels polled locals, ages six to 16, in 10 of the countrys top vacation destinations Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco and Washington D.C. to find out whats hip, hot and happening in their cities. An insiders guide to the best of spots and activities, Kids-Eye View helps visiting parents discover a citys best-kept secrets and activities that have been kid-tested and -approved.

Theres no better way to find out what will interest and excite kids while on vacation than asking them, said John Lee, vice president of brand marketing for Embassy Suites Hotels. Through our survey, weve created our own version of a kids concierge at properties across the country. We know 93 percent of parents surveyed(1) say their kids impact what they do on vacation now, with our Kids-Eye View program they have the help they need to become vacation superheroes for their families.

The following is a brief look at some of the activities local kids raved about in their hometowns(2). Families wanting an inside look at their vacation destination to assist with the planning process can visit embassysuites.com starting in early September for complete survey results. Beginning today, families on vacation can stop by the front desk during their stay at an Embassy Suites Hotel in participating Kids-Eye View cities.

Atlanta

  • Andretti Speed Lab: Kids and parents alike may feel the need for speed at the Andretti Speed Lab. Located just north of Atlanta, this is the first fully enclosed interactive racing and entertainment complex in North America. Besides taking race laps around the track, families can climb on a ropes course, shoot pool, scale a climbing wall and more.
  • Dahlonega Gold Museum: Located on one of the largest gold deposits found east of the Mississippi River, the museum marks the site of the first gold rush in America. On a day trip to Dahlonega, Ga., (about 50 miles outside Atlanta) families will learn about the mining history of Georgia during tours of old gold mine tunnels and while panning for their own gold.
  • Other Atlanta kid-suggested hot spots include: The Varsity, Underground Atlanta and Stone Mountain Park.
Boston
  • Bertuccis Brick Oven Pizzeria: With more than a dozen locations throughout the Boston area, Bertuccis is known as one of the citys favorite family restaurants. In fact, one kid said, I like the oven baked bread its wicked good. And even better than that, children get to play with their food here. Kids are welcomed with a coloring book/menu, crayons and a slab of raw dough. Thats right! Kids can play with pizza dough while they wait.
  • Curious Creatures KidZoo: Parents and kids should make reservations four to six weeks in advance because this place is a zooliterally! Designed specifically for kids, the staff brings out a variety of furry animals for kids of all ages to hold, examine and interact with during their visit.
  • Other kid-approved choices in Boston include: The USS Constitution, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Museum of Science.
Chicago
  • Garretts Popcorn: Garretts Popcorn on Michigan Avenue has been a hit since 1949. Lines stretch down the street daily as those in the know wait for popcorn made from a generations-old secret family recipe. The CaramelCrisp® is a longtime favorite but cashew, cheese, pecan and macadamia are popular as well.
  • Museum of Science & Industry: The Museum of Science & Industry invented the hands-on museum experience. Kids are not likely to admit it, but they will learn a lot about science as they walk through a Boeing 727 airplane; experience a 20-foot tall walk-through model of the human heart; or take a ride in a working coalmine shaft elevator from 1933. And for those brave enough, one Chicago kid says, In the underground exhibit, the bugs are bigger than you are.
  • Kids in Chicago were also talking about: American Girl Place, the Architecture Boat Tour and Giordanos® Pizza.
Dallas
  • Eisenbergs Skate Park: This family-owned and -operated skate park in Plano, Texas, creates a safe, friendly environment for kids to improve their skate and bike skills. The park has more than 30,000-square-feet of ramps and smooth grounds a nirvana for the skating crew. Eisenbergs also runs a skate camp and hosts bands and DJs on select evenings.
  • Nickelrama: Families come to the Nickelrama Arcade for hours of fun and entertainment, available for mere nickels. Video games, simulators, ticket games and rides offered at an affordable price make this a popular attraction, located in Garland, Texas.
  • Other kid-friendly locales in Dallas include: Scarborough Faire, Grapevine Mills Mall and Studio Movie Grill.
Denver
  • Fat City: Bowling has been reinvented at this Littleton, Colo., fun-plex where local kids say they can get silly. The retro bowling experience features big screens over every lane, black lights and funky music, not to mention a host of other entertainment from laser tag to mini-golf and bumper cars to an 18-hole miniature golf course.
  • Tiny Town: If everything seems really small in Tiny Town, dont worry it was planned that way. Nestled in a canyon about 30 minutes outside Denver, this Western village was built in 1915 at one-sixth scale. One of Colorados most cherished landmarks, Tiny Town is home to more than 100 buildings and a steam-powered locomotive for children to ride.
  • Denver kids who know how to have fun also go to: The U.S. Mint, Four Mile Historic Park and Teds Montana Inn.
Los Angeles
  • Hollywood Bowl: It isnt summer in Los Angeles without the Hollywood Bowl. As the largest outdoor amphitheater in the country, visitors enjoy musical magic under the stars. Legendary performers, world-class musicians, delectable picnics and amazing fireworks make this a treat for the entire family!
  • In-N-Out Burger®: Angelenos crave burgers from this one-of-a-kind fast food chain that boasts the freshest, highest quality ingredients. With a simple menu of fries, burgers and shakes, everything is made fresh to order. Kids will enjoy ordering from the secret, un-posted menu those in the know in L.A. say to ask for a burger made animal style with grilled onions and mustard.
  • Hip kids in L.A. also know about: The La Brea Tar Pits & Page Museum, shopping on Melrose Avenue and Mashti Malones Ice Cream.
New York City
  • Mars2112:A few blocks north of Times Square is a portal to the Red Planet Mars2112. At this elaborately themed restaurant, patrons are issued passports and escorted to a full-sized flying saucer ride. Screens display computer landscapes, speakers play robotic music and waiters clad in Federation uniforms serve space-age fare such as Lobster Man From Mars and Ziggy Stardusts Spaghetti.
  • Peanut Butter Co.: Get sticky at this cozy shop in Greenwich Village. Peanut Butter Co. is famous for its hand-made peanut butter and unique sandwich and dessert combinations. Try the Fluffernutter (peanut butter and marshmallow), the peanut B.L.T. or as one kid simply states, Get the Elvis. That is, the Kings personal favorite: peanut butter, honey and banana on grilled white bread.
  • In-the-know kids from New York also suggest: Serendipity 3, SoHo and Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex.
Phoenix
  • Mary Coyles Ice Cream: Hot spot isnt quite the right phrase. Mary Coyles is more a cold spot, serving up a full menu of ice cream delights. Make every calorie count with the Mountain seven pounds of ice cream, four toppings, whipped cream and nuts. Its a treat the whole family will want to share!
  • Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse: Travel back in time to the untamed Wild West at this authentic 1880s town, located in Scottsdale, Ariz. More than a restaurant, families can experience how the West was fun with staged gunfights, stunt shows, stagecoach rides, train rides, a petting ranch, horseback riding and more!
  • For a hot vacation in Phoenix, local kids also recommend: The Heard Museum, the Phoenix Skatepark and My Mothers Restaurant.
San Francisco
  • The Exploratorium: Housed within the walls of San Franciscos Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of more than 650 science, art and human perception exhibits. A museum and an education center, its exhibits and programs focus on how humans see, hear, smell, feel and otherwise experience the world around them. This experimental, hands-on museum is designed to spark curiosity. Kids in San Francisco give their seal of approval It has a lot of cool science stuff, and you get to dissect a cows eye.
  • Jelly Belly® Factory Tour: An hour drive from San Francisco, the Jelly Belly Candy Company is a sugar lovers delight. During the 40-minute walking tour, Jelly Belly Guides show the real working factory where more than 150 different sweet treats are cooked up. Learn the secrets of how they create the legendary Jelly Belly bean. Discover how long it takes for a Jelly Belly to grow. Then, stop by the Sampling Bar for Jelly Belly favorites.

Assume a spy identity, and then gain access to the worlds largest collection of international espionage artifacts ever on public display. Explore exhibits about disguise, surveillance and threat analysis while discovering the long history of spying.
  • Puppet Company Playhouse: The Puppet Company recently opened a new state-of-the-art facility dedicated to what else? puppetry, becoming the first year-round theater in the country devoted exclusively to Puppet Theater and education.
