Orlando, FL July 2003 The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI), in collaboration with Energy Star®, has produced a video to help lodging operations develop strategic energy management plans that benefit both the bottom line and the environment.

The video, Energy-$aving Tips for Lodging, and its accompanying print guide highlight basic practices for reducing energy costs throughout a lodging property. Tips include no-cost, low-cost, steps that can dramatically reduce energy bills, such as encouraging guests to reuse towels, booking hotel rooms strategically based on weather and occupancy patterns, and monitoring energy consumption to spot problem areas within a hotel. By implementing any or all of the suggestions outlined in Energy-$aving Tips for Lodging, properties can see an improvement in their bottom-line and make a quick return on investment for their efforts.

These energy savings add up so that every $1 saved in energy costs can have the same effect on a propertys bottom line as increasing revenue by roughly $2 to $3. The results speak for themselves: a 10 percent reduction in energy costs is equivalent to increasing ADR by up to $1.35.

Energy Star is pleased to have partnered with the Educational Institute of AH&LA to create a video that will help hotel owners prevent pollution through sound energy management, said Stuart Brodsky, National Program Manager of Commercial Property Markets for Energy Star. In hotel properties, opportunities for a whole-building approach to energy management include integrated building operating systems as well as purchasing Energy Star labeled products for the back of the house and guest rooms. Combined, these efforts enhance a hotels profit margins and image.

By promoting a propertys participation in Energy Star, a hotel can also collect positive feedback from guests, improve its corporate reputation, and gain repeat business from guests who have been more comfortable during their stay as a result of a hotels sound energy management practices.

Brenda Moons, EIs vice president, industry sales, notes, This video provides a blueprint that will assist properties in lowering energy usage, which assists the goals of Energy Star and the EPA. Whether its Maintenance, Housekeeping, or Front Office, each department can find ways to save energy without investing money, and properties can track and measure the savings that impact their bottom line.

Until August 31, 2003, customers can take $10 off the price of this video in a special introductory offer.
