North Companies Australia has been awarded the contract to feed up
to 6000 local and international athletes and officials during the Melbourne
2006 Commonwealth Games.
Announcing the decision recently, Chairman of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation, Mr. Ronald J Walker, said the company would be responsible for delivering 20,000 meals a day at the Athletes� Village. �Delaware North Companies
Australia will be responsible for more than 300,000 meals in total � 50,000
more meals than were served during the Manchester Commonwealth Games,�
Mr. Walker said.
�With 71 nations competing in Melbourne in March 2006, there will be an enormously diverse range of tastebuds to cater for. I�m confident Delaware North�s catering solution will ensure the cultural, religious, dietary and social requirements of all athletes and officials will be met.� Delaware North�s Managing Director, Dana Nelson, said the company believed the Commonwealth Games were �at the pinnacle of the special event calendar for Melbourne and Australia for 2006�. �This contract is a highlight both nationally and internationally for our Company,� Ms Nelson said. �Through our strong management team, industry partners and strategic recruitment drive, a total of 650 management and staff will be mobilised to ensure the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games are the best Games ever,� Ms Nelson said. Minister for the Commonwealth Games, Justin Madden said Delaware North had extensive experience at catering at major sporting and entertainment venues throughout Australia. �For the past 18 years, Delaware North have served up millions of meals at Rod Laver Arena for international sporting events such as the Australian Open,� Minister Madden said. �They also manage world-class catering contracts of several other Games venues including the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, Telstra Dome, where Rugby 7s will be played, and the Multi Purpose Venue at Melbourne Park � the venue for track cycling.� The Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness 4500 elite athletes from 71 nations taking part in the XVIII Commonwealth Games to be held from 15-26 March 2006.
