Seen
recently on HGTVs Fine Living segment, Top Ten Summer Travel Destinations,
the Verandas (verandas.com) is a
luxury bed and breakfast inn with eight spacious corner guest rooms. The
8,500-square-foot Victorian Italianate Mansion is located at 202 Nun Street,
only two blocks from the Riverwalk along the scenic Cape Fear River. Originally
built in 1854 by Benjamin Beery, the massive four-story house suffered
extensive fire and water damage in 1992. Boarded up and decaying, the antebellum
mansion was purchased in 1995 by its present owners/innkeepers, Dennis
Madsen and Chuck Pennington, who proceeded with extensive restoration for
which they have received awards. Since the Verandas opened its doors to
guests on Valentines Day in 1997, it has been recommended by Southern Living
(April 2003) and featured in North American Inns (Spring 2003), as well
as Conde Nast Johansens Recommended guide and Select Registry, among other
publications.
Each
room is beautifully appointed with original artwork and English and French
antique furniture. Light-filled rooms and carefully selected color schemes
further create an elegant yet relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Luxurious
private baths feature marble floors and oversized oval tubs. The inns
cupola and two of its four verandas (hence, the name) overlook a neatly
manicured garden that has received a Community Excellence Award. Modern
amenities include individual climate control, cable TV, VCRs, and telephones
with internet connection.
