Wilmington,
NC April 2004 During the month of May, attractions and community organizations
in Historic Wilmington and North
Carolinas Cape Fear Coast will honor the 139th anniversary of the
end of the Civil War with special events and programs that commemorate
Confederate History Month. The Cape Fear Coast is among the most historically
significant regions in the United States for Civil War history. During
the Civil War, a massive network of defenses at Fort Fisher protected the
Cape Fear River. Wilmington was the last Atlantic Coast port of the Confederacy
to remain open to trade. Fort Fisher fell to Federal troops during the
largest naval bombardment of the 19th century on January 15, 1865 and the
city soon filled with troops in occupation.
Several
area historical sites interpret the areas Confederate history, such as
Fort Fisher State Historic Site with Civil War mounds and visitor center
exhibits, and the Cape Fear Museum of History & Science, NCs oldest
history museum which was established in 1898 to house Confederate relics.
Theres also Bellamy Mansion Museum of History & Design Arts, which
was used in 1865 as Union military headquarters following Wilmingtons
surrender. Other sites include the Wilmington Railroad Museum that spotlights
the importance of the railway during the war, and the Louise Wells Cameron
Art Museum, where newly restored Confederate defensive mounds are located
at the site of the Battle of Forks Road that exists on the museums 9.5-acre
campus. St. James Episcopal Church was occupied by Federal Troops and used
as a Civil War hospital. Civil War graves are located in cemeteries such
as the Wilmington National Cemetery, Bellevue Cemetery and Oakdale Cemetery
(site of the Confederate Memorial Monument and the gravesites of Mrs. Rose
ONeal Greenhow, Confederate Secret Service Agent, and appx. 400 unknown
Confederate soldiers). Nearby attractions include Fort Anderson State Historic
Site/Brunswick Town, a fort that was part of the Cape Fear defenses and
fell in February 1865, and Poplar Grove Plantation, where period demonstrations
and exhibits interpret plantation life during Confederate times.
