Boone, NC November
2010 Appalachian
State University (ASU) defensive end Jabari Fletcher and punter Sam
Martin became Appalachians ninth and 10th Southern Conference Players
of the Week this season when they were named the leagues Defensive and
Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday (November 1).
At least one Mountaineer has garnered weekly accolades from the SoCon following each of ASUs eight games this season. The honor is the second in a row for Fletcher and the second of the season for Martin, who also earned the recognition following the Apps 35-17 victory at Samford on Sept. 25. Fletchers second-straight award-winning performance was highlighted by his 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown that gave the Mountaineers a 21-6 lead on the opening series of second half in ASUs 37-26 victory over visiting Furman. In addition to the touchdown the first of his career and Appalachians first defensive score of the season Fletcher recorded five tackles, a half sack and a quarterback hurry in Saturdays triumph. The half sack gave the senior 20 sacks for his career tops among all active SoCon players and ninth in ASU history. For the season, the Buck Buchanan Award candidate ranks third in the league with seven sacks and fourth with 11.5 tackles for loss. Martin earned the recognition after averaging a sterling 43.7 yards over six punts in Saturdays win. Two of the six punts were downed inside the 20 yard line including a 46-yarder downed at the one while a 51-yarder just missed being stopped short of the goal line by Mountaineer pursuers. For the season, 12 of the sophomores 34 punts have pinned opponents inside their 20 yard line. Fletcher, Martin and the top-ranked Mountaineers (8-0, 6-0 SoCon) put their undefeated record and 26-game SoCon winning streak on the line Saturday when they travel to longtime nemesis Georgia Southern. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Ga. The game will not be televised but GoASU TV subscribers can watch the entire contest live at GoASU.com. Media Contact:
