Las Vegas, NV June 2003 In an astounding victory, in front of millions of viewers on live, primetime television, amateur golfer, Andy Rineer, Las Vegas, Nev, triumphed over legendary pro, Lee Trevino, in head-to-head competition for $100,000 on Monday night. In a simultaneous match, amateur Andy Chao, San Diego, Calif., was defeated by John Daly for $100,000, in Best Westerns People vs. the Pros at Lake Las Vegas. Chao and Trevino each collected $50,000. This unprecedented sports competition aired live on Monday, June 2 from 8-11pm EDT on The Golf Channel.

Rineer and Chao were among 100 players in each of two age divisions who competed in a three-day, stroke-play competition, with the benefit of their handicaps, May 30 - June 1, at Lake Las Vegas. Chao, a professional stock trader, emerged as the 49 or under amateur champion to tee-off against Daly; Rineer, also a stock trader, was the 50 or older amateur champion facing Trevino. Amateur golfers, with verifiable handicaps, entered an online sweepstakes or a bidding auction via eBay to qualify for the stroke-play competition. A portion of the proceeds benefit The First Tee, a non-profit initiative of the World Golf Foundation.

I didnt play my best, but I played extremely well, said Trevino. Ill have to take him on the road with me.

All amateurs wonder how well they might compete against the best in the world. Because of its handicap system, golf is the only sport that can pit the common man in head-to-head competition against a top professional.

I wish Lee had played better. I wanted to keep going, said Rineer with a laugh. Rineer plays golf only about ten times a year, when the weather isnt too hot.

The final score for the Rineer/Trevino match saw Rineer, with a nine handicap, winning five and four. The final score for Daly and Chao, with a six handicap, was Daly winning five and four.

Lee Trevino, 63, is a two-time winner of three major championships: the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship, in addition to 29 PGA Tour and 29 Champions Tour wins. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981.

John Daly, 36, the longest driver on the PGA Tour for a record-setting 11th year his tee shots average over 300 yards has won both the British Open and the PGA Championship; and has finished first on the PGA Tour four times.
