Austin, TX November 2004 At BedandBreakfast.com, we take beds seriously. After all, bed is our first name, so we understand how important it is to have a good nights sleep in pampered surroundings. Over the past few months, hotel chains have been pillow fighting over who has the best beds, in an effort to rival what B&Bs have been offering for years. To demonstrate our belief that B&Bs have the corner on amenities, BedandBreakfast.com sent a survey to 4500 innkeepers across the United States. The results prove what the B&B industry has long maintained: B&Bs not only offer a more personalized experience, but travelers are much more likely to experience upgraded amenities at no additional charge.

Results from the www.BedandBreakfast.com survey came from B&B innkeepers in 44 states and showed:

  • 65% offer pillowtop mattresses with 600 coils or more.
  • 84% provide cotton sheets with at least a 250-thread count, some reporting 800- and 1000-thread counts.
  • 76% offer handmade quilts or down comforters on their beds.
  • 74% offer a choice of pillows including feather or hypo-allergenic, firm or soft.
  • 78% provide robes for their guests.
  • 60% offer free high-speed Internet access, many offering free wireless (Wi-Fi) throughout their inns.
With lawsuits against hotel chains mounting over hidden fees for everything from electricity to use of the pool, Americans are increasingly turning to B&Bs for business and leisure travel. According to Chris Woodyard at USA TODAY, several law firms have launched lawsuits against major hotel chains for unfair surcharges, making B&Bs the logical choice for those seeking upgraded amenities with no hidden costs.
