Canadas National Ski and Snowboard Week Emphasizes
Fun, Safety and Exercise to Help Fight Childhood Obesity
Canadas National Ski and Snowboard Week Emphasizes Fun, Safety and Exercise
Collingwood, Ontario January 2006 Canadas National Ski and Snowboard Week was launched last week at Ontarios Blue Mountain Ski Resort in front of a special audience of media, special guests and 50 Grade 5 students from the Greater Toronto Area.

This was a wonderful gift for well deserving students from Brandon Gate Elementary School in Mississauga. Each of the 50 students received complimentary ski and snowboard lessons and equipment rentals to get them up and sliding on the slopes. Swany performance gloves (Vancouver) donated 50 pairs of SK23J gloves and the students also received a Grade 5 snow pass book so they can continue free skiing and snowboarding at over 35 Ontario ski areas participating in the winter program. In addition to the thrill of getting a day off school, the enthusiasm and smiling faces were heart warming as most of the 50 children had never visited a ski area north of the city or participated in an outdoor recreational winter sport.

The health benefits of the program are also enormous.

Colin Chedore President of the Canadian Ski Council (CSC) says, Studies have shown that when kids are dressed warmly and exposed to healthy, cool, outside air their metabolic rates speed up and they burn calories faster.

Safety film for Skiers and Snowboarders
Students also were the first to see the airing of the 20-minute film A Little Respect Think First designed to instruct young skiers, snowboarders, coaches, trainers, teachers, and parents about being safe while having fun skiing and snowboarding.

Audience response is often the measure of a good film. The sponsors and producers should be pleased with the 50 attentive and enthusiastic class members. Not only did they see the humour indicated by their laughter, they also responded to a series of questions at the end of the film demonstrating they understood the more important safety components.

A Little Respect/Think First was produced by the ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada a national non-profit injury prevention organization, endorsed by the Canadian Congress of Neurological Sciences, the Canadian Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the Canadian Spine Society.

The film is a comprehensive safety program, in the form of a 20-minute DVD/VHS, which educates young skiers and snowboarders about the risks of injuries and how to ski and snowboard safely. This program is targeted towards ages 6-12.

400Eleven.com supports National Ski week and has developed a number of Winter Getaway Packages in the major Ontario ski resort destinations north of Toronto.

Hats off to the Canadian Ski Council, Blue Mountain Ski Resort and the ski areas across Canada who developed the Grade 5 Ski Pass for 10-year-old children or children born in l995. Canadas National Ski Week concludes January 22, 2006.
