State University – Hospitality Management Program – Petersburg, VA
Formerly Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, the program was re-engineered to offer students a challenging curriculum, hands on experiences and numerous opportunities to practice their hospitality skills in a fully-equipped simulated hotel and food service facility, with state-of-the-art classrooms. The curriculum is designed in recognition of the demands of the industry for well-trained and qualified leaders. The focus of the program is the development of managerial skills essential to all hospitality managers, with course work in management of hotels and restaurants, travel tourism, entertainment and recreational facilities, convention and meeting planning; food service systems management; marketing and accounting; hospitality law and general management. Students participate in laboratory experiences and are required to complete two supervised internships to ensure the application of classroom theory to the workplace and to prepare them for the operational challenges of the industry. We strive to help our students become industry leaders. The Hospitality Management Program approaches this task with a curriculum that reflects real world scenarios and experiences. We invest in your future by developing the group interaction skills, leadership abilities and interpersonal dexterity that are essential for effective leaders. Our goal is that every Virginia State University Hospitality Management student graduates with a degree, but also the business skills, knowledge and experience required for long-term success in the hospitality industry.
