The School of Hospitality
& Tourism Management was established 35 years ago at the University
of Guelph following an initiative taken by leading companies in the Canadian
Hospitality Industry. The School was the first in Canada to introduce a
four year undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce program. Today the following
programs are available, with a current enrolment of 650 undergraduate students
and over 70 graduate students:

Undergraduate Programs

Qualification: Bachelor
of Commerce Honours Degree
Focus: High school graduates
(25% transfers)
Length: 4 years
Courses: 40 courses (+800
hours of hospitality work experience)
Majors:
a. Hotel and Foodservice
Administration (HAFA)
b. Hotel and Foodservice
Administration (HAFA – Co-op (5 years))
c. Tourism Management
Co-op Option - 12 months
paid employment (May to May)
- Commences after 2nd year
- Additional Fee Required
- Five years

Graduate Programs
|
Qualification: Master of
Business Administration (MBA)
Formats: Residential and
Distance Web-based
|
Residential:
Focus: University graduates
with hospitality experience.
Length: 12 month
Courses: 13 courses.

Distance Web-based:
Focus: Established mid-career
professionals in the Hospitality and/or Tourism industry (The undergraduate
degree requirement may be waived).
Length: 30 months part-time
with 2 one-week residential components.
Courses: 13 courses and
a major paper or two electronic courses (courses are taken sequentially
– each course is 8 weeks in duration).

Management Development
Programs

Certificate in Hospitality
Studies (Distance Web-based)
Certificate in Hospitality
Studies (Distance Web-based)
Focus: Potential managers
with no post-secondary education in hospitality studies who want to upgrade.
Length: Two years part-time
Courses: 5 courses (each
course is 12 weeks and is recognized as a degree-credit course).

Hospitality Manager’s Development
Course (HMDC)
Focus: For experienced middle
managers who are being prepared to assume wider responsibilities. The course
provides an opportunity for managers with specialized knowledge to develop
broader based management capability.
Length: 6 day (residential)
Content: Emphasis on finance
and organizational behaviour together with a computer business simulation.
