The mission of the Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management (RHIM) program at Texas Tech University is to prepare individuals who will make a contribution to the hospitality industry and to society as a whole through quality education, research, and service. The RHIM program, established in 1983, is housed in The College of Human Sciences in the department of Education, Nutrition and Restaurant/Hotel Management and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. Enrollment has remained steady at 400+ undergraduates.

Studies in RHIM include courses in both general education and hospitality management. RHIM classes include food production management, hotel operations, computer applications, beverage management, travel and tourism, entrepreneurship, hospitality law, marketing, financial control, purchasing, and facilities management. Additional classes are taken in accounting, communications, and human resource management. Students also gain practical management knowledge through diverse laboratory experiences. These range from front desk hotel operations to product evaluation in purchasing to managing Skyviews of Texas Tech, a student-run fine-dining restaurant.

Texas Tech University offers a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degree in Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management. A doctoral degree in Hospitality Management is also available. Graduate studies in the RHIM program can be tailored to meet the needs of each individual. New students have the option to take either the professional or the research track, working with the graduate advisor and other faculty to develop a program to meet their needs. The master’s degree is also provided in a web-based format to meet the needs of working professionals.
