SIU Carbondale is home to 23,000 students from the United States and 120 countries, and ranks sixth among traditionally white institutions in total number of degrees in all fields to black undergraduates. Carbondale has also been cited as one of fifty most desirable places to live in the United States. Founded in 1869, SIU is located on the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest and only a few hours from Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Atlanta and Louisville.

The H&T specialization is home to 120 undergraduates and is the most diverse department within the College of Agricultural Sciences. Each year select industry leaders visit to lecture, confer with and offer guidance to our students. More than 100 hospitality companies have recruited our students.

The H&T specialization wants you to “Achieve Your Dreams” in the hospitality industry. To do so, our curriculum is both practical and visionary, ensuring that student’s graduate perceptive of the industries complexities and challenges. The specialization offers options in restaurant, hotel, or tourism management enabling students to build competencies in their area of interest. Learning keeps pace with changing industry demands and takes place outside the classroom too whether in campus food service operations or through our “community as the classroom” opportunities. Our faculty has a broad range of industry experience that brings applied practice to management theory. Our H&T educational opportunities prepare students for our industries only constant—CHANGE!

There are several professional networking opportunities available to students through the Hospitality & Tourism Association and National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH). Activities include industry guest speakers, field trips, the annual NSMH Convention, and the National Restaurant Association Trade Show in Chicago. As well, our H&T Advisory Board composed of industry leaders from five states regularly advise and interact with students through seminars, round-table discussions and mentoring one-on-one.

The Specialization has created an internship program using the professional network of the advisory board, faculty, and alumni in order to place students in an environment of success. Students are required to have two 400-hour internships; the second must be in a supervisory position or students may participate in one-directed-six-month internship. The internship is arranged and approved by the internship coordinator, the student and their advisor. Career placement is also excellent because of our unique professional network.

As the only accredited public program in the state of Illinois, we are recognized as a leader of hospitality and tourism education.
